Kyon History:
The kennel is situated on our old farmstead, on land which has been in the family, since pioneer time. We are, therefore, an integral part of the local community. Many local youth have gotten their start at Kyon Kennels. Former staff has gone on to become Dog-groomers, Veterinarians, dog- breeders or Animal Health Technicians.
We have raised 6 children on the farm. These days we only have two teenagers still at home, but our other 4 adult children often spend weekends and holidays here. Kyon kennels is a family-run business and, therefore, all the members of the Barr- Klouman Clan are engaged in Kyon Kennels’ affairs.
We have been breeding Golden Retrievers in Canada, since the mid 1970s. We show our goldens extensively and have trained many to the highest level in obedience. Many of our dogs work in the field as hunting dogs... and others actively compete in agility. We have made a significant impact on the gene-pool of Golden Retrievers in North America.
In 1989 we also introduced a new and quite rare herding dog-breed;the Norwegian Buhund to this country. These highly instinctive dogs were also used for herding our beef cattle. We have bred multiple champions, high level obedience workers and master agility dogs as well as steady reliable working herding dogs.
We started boarding a few dogs from our own breeding-program, in 1978.
As of 1990, we built a new kennel-building for both our own dogs and boarders, thus, increasing our capacity to 30 dogs. Since then we have provided a friendly, positive atmosphere for clients- both human and furry or feathery or on occasion lizardy.
2007 saw expansion when we were granted a boarding kennel license for 75 dogs. Kyon Kennels can now proudly boast of a loyal clientele from throughout the G.T.A., including Toronto, as well as locally (Shelburne, Orangeville, Alliston and beyond).
2008 saw major changes when we undertook a major renovation. We have added in-floor heating, tiled floors and complete renovations of the grooming room. We are sure all our customers will be even more comfortable.
